John Thune and John Cornyn. McConnell's penchant for bipartisanship and support for Ukraine aid in particular have rankled a small segment of GOP senators, and that cohort could be influential in determining who GOP senators succeed in November.

Mitch McConnell is stepping down, and Republican senators have months to decide who succeeds him. The end of his reign marks a shift in the GOP, but Trump won't get to fully decide the next leader. But one thing's for sure: Trump's not going to hand-pick the next Senate GOP leader. House Republicans first chose House Majority Leader Steve Scalise to be their candidate, only handing the nomination to Jordan after Scalise dropped out. It will be important for the eventual GOP leader to demonstrate that he or she could work with Trump if he's elected, but it won't be the only thing.

A core group of negotiators have been laboring for nearly two months over changes to U.S. border and immigration policy and hoped to unveil the legislation later this week. However, the emergency funding package has been delayed months in Congress after Republicans insisted that border policy changes also be included in the package. It remains to be seen whether the border policy changes, which have been negotiated in private with top White House officials, will be enough to satisfy most Republican senators. The group has mostly reached agreements on policy changes, but on Monday was working with Senate appropriators to determine funding levels for the programs. Democrats have bemoaned the Republican decision to tie Ukraine aid with border policy changes.

"There is no evidence that you have a seizure disorder or that you experienced a stroke, TIA or movement disorder such as Parkinson's disease," Monahan wrote. McConnell's office declined to answer a request for further detail on what doctors believe caused the incidents. Twice in the last six weeks, the Kentucky Republican froze up during public appearances. The two incidents have raised fresh questions among Republican and Democratic members of Congress about McConnell and other aging lawmakers.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell had two recent health scares while at press conferences. The Capitol physician said McConnell may have just been dehydrated and didn't have a stroke. GOP Sen. Rand Paul, also a licensed physician, said he doesn't believe the physician's diagnosis. But on Tuesday afternoon, Paul, a licensed ophthalmologist, who graduated from Duke Medical School in 1988, told reporters he disagreed with the Capitol physician's findings. A 2021 law would require Beshear to appoint a Republican to the Senate should McConnell step down. Beshear attempted to veto that law at the time and could defy it if McConnell ever vacated his seat. AdvertisementAdvertisement"If Mitch does leave office, I think (Beshear) will appoint who he wants to appoint and let them challenge it in court. Some Kentucky Republicans, however, have said McConnell should have stepped down last year. Scott Jennings, a McConnell advisor, told The Post that the senator seemed fine during a Wednesday evening GOP fundraiser.

After Mitch McConnell froze again, a Kentucky GOP leader said the senator should have left last year. Bob Barney, the GOP chair in Jessamine County, told The Post he was "disappointed" in the situation. But McConnell's Republican Senate colleagues have, by and large, rallied around him. Barney told the newspaper he feels as though McConnell won't be selected as the GOP leader once again, which will eventually push him to leave office. "We're all very disappointed that he didn't let someone else take over as leader in 2022," Barney told The Post.

CNN —It would be a mistake to presuppose these are the final days of Sen. Mitch McConnell’s record-setting run as the Republican leader in the Senate. In January, Trump referred to Barrasso as McConnell’s “flunky” during a radio interview in Barrasso’s home state of Wyoming. Trump views McConnell as an enemyNo Senate leader will be able to maintain a flawless relationship with Trump, but McConnell’s has been particularly fraught. McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, who served in Trump’s administration as transportation secretary, has more recently been the subject of racial insults from Trump. Any successor would have to navigate Trump’s control of the party – and the very real potential that Trump could return to the White House.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Mitch McConnell froze and stopped talking mid-sentence. He also swiped at Biden's age, saying Biden got elected to the Senate before DeSantis was born. One of the reasons I'm running compared to Biden, I mean, my gosh, we need energy in the executive. DeSantis, 44, also took a swipe at President Joe Biden's age, pointing out that Biden — now 80 and the oldest sitting president in US history — was elected to the Senate before DeSantis was born. Biden was elected as a senator from Delaware in 1972, when he was 29.

Dianne Feinstein weighed in on Mitch McConnell's freeze-up in front of reporters this week. Asked about it the day after it happened, she said she wasn't aware of the incident. The 90-year-old California Democrat — whose own cognitive decline and health issues have been the subject of scrutiny, particularly in the months since she came down with a shingles infection — was asked by a Los Angeles Times reporter on Thursday about McConnell's health scare. Both Feinstein and McConnell have taken extended absences from the Senate this year in relation to their respective health issues. After McConnell's incident this week, multiple outlets reported that he's suffered numerous falls this year, along with an already-known fall at a Washington event in March that left the Kentucky Republican with a concussion.
